The four options, side by side
If you have ever had to send a suitcase, a carton of supplies, or a forgotten textbook from the plains into Himachal Pradesh, you have probably run into all four of these in some form.
| Criteria | Patwadi | India Post (Speed Post) | Delhivery / Ecom Express | HRTC Bus Cargo (informal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Parcels, luggage & cartons — individuals and small businesses | Remote villages, documents, C2C | E-commerce orders to HP towns | Cheapest bulk option if you can be there in person |
| Coverage | 120+ routes across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, HP, J&K, Gujarat & Maharashtra | Every PIN code incl. Lahaul-Spiti & Kinnaur | Shimla, Mandi, Kangra, Solan, Dharamshala — urban only | 2,500+ HRTC routes but informal & ad hoc |
| Dispatch to HP | 48 hours | 3–15 days | 2–5 days, weather dependent | Same day if a bus is going — no guarantee |
| Tracking | Live on WhatsApp — loaded, in transit, arrived, delivered | Limited, online portal | App-based | None |
| Payment | UPI, upfront — no cash | Cash or online at post office | Prepaid / COD via platform | Cash to conductor |
| GST invoice | Yes, on request | Limited | Yes, for registered sellers | No |
| Return shipments | Same rate, both directions | Separate booking | Weak — known industry gap | Re-negotiate each time |
| Minimum order | None — 1 item or 20, same per-item rate | Per-item booking | Seller account often required | None, but space not guaranteed |
| If something goes missing | Tracked & accountable | Slow claims process | Claims via platform | No recourse |
India Post / Speed Post — when it is still the right call
India Post’s biggest advantage is one nobody else can match: it is the only service with universal PIN code coverage, including remote areas like Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur. It handles items from 0.5 kg to 20 kg and remains the default for documents and consumer-to-consumer parcels.
The trade-off is speed. Delivery can take 3 to 15 days depending on the destination. Use India Post when your destination is a remote PIN code that other services don’t reach, or when you are sending something light where speed genuinely doesn’t matter.
Delhivery, Ecom Express & other e-commerce couriers
Delhivery, Ecom Express and Ekart handle most e-commerce last-mile delivery to Himachal Pradesh’s bigger towns — Shimla, Mandi, Kangra, Solan and Dharamshala. If you are a seller on Amazon or Flipkart shipping to these towns, this is usually the path your order already takes.
Coverage thins fast outside town centres, and these networks are prone to seasonal blackouts during heavy snowfall. Reverse logistics — getting a return shipment back out of HP — is a known weak point across this entire segment.
HRTC bus cargo — the original informal network
Over 3,200 HRTC buses run more than 2,500 routes daily, each with underfloor cargo space. For decades this has been booked the old way — cash to the conductor, around Rs 3–8 per kg, no ticket, no tracking, no SLA, and no recourse if your parcel is left at the wrong stop.
It is genuinely the cheapest way to move bulk goods into the hills. It is also exactly the infrastructure Patwadi formalises. Same buses. Same routes. But booked digitally, with a guaranteed slot and a tracked outcome.
Patwadi — formal booking on the same network
Patwadi runs on North India’s existing intercity bus and freight network and turns it into a service with a guaranteed booking, live tracking, and a paper trail. Booking takes three steps: send your details on WhatsApp, drop the item at a collection point, then follow it live as it moves until it is collected at the other end. Payment is UPI, upfront. GST invoices available on request. Return trips are charged at the same rate.
Which should you actually use?
A guaranteed cargo slot beats hoping there’s room on the next HRTC bus — especially at semester start and end.
If the destination is beyond HP’s main towns, Speed Post is still the only thing that reaches it.
If you are already on that platform for forward shipments, keep using it — but plan separately for returns.
No minimums, GST invoicing on request, live tracking the whole way.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to send a parcel to Himachal Pradesh?
HRTC bus cargo booked informally with a conductor is typically the lowest per-kg cost (around Rs 3–8 per kg) but comes with no tracking and no guaranteed space. Patwadi runs on the same bus network with a flat per-item rate from Rs 500 up to 20 kg and adds tracking, a guaranteed slot, and accountability — making it the cheapest reliable option for most parcels and luggage.
How long does it take to send something from Delhi or Chandigarh to Shimla, Manali, Mandi or Dharamshala?
Patwadi dispatches to Himachal Pradesh destinations within 48 hours. India Post takes 3 to 15 days depending on the destination PIN code. Delhivery typically takes 2 to 5 days but can pause during heavy snowfall.
Does any courier deliver to remote areas like Lahaul-Spiti or Kinnaur?
India Post / Speed Post is currently the only service with universal PIN code coverage reaching remote areas such as Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, though delivery to these areas can take up to 15 days.
Can I track a parcel sent via HRTC bus cargo?
Informal HRTC bus cargo bookings arranged directly with a conductor have no tracking and no digital record. Patwadi formalises the same bus network with live WhatsApp updates at each stage: loaded, in transit, arrived and delivered.
Is there a minimum order size to book with Patwadi?
No. A single carton, suitcase or duffel bag is priced the same per item as a larger shipment of twenty.
Can I send a return shipment back from Himachal Pradesh at the same price?
Yes. Patwadi charges the same rate for return shipments on the same corridor — useful for students sending luggage home at the end of a semester.
Do I need cash to book a shipment with Patwadi?
No. Patwadi is booked over WhatsApp and paid upfront via UPI, with no cash handling at either end. This differs from informal HRTC bus cargo bookings, which are typically cash-only and paid directly to the conductor.
